John Robert Richard, 69, Chanute, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.
He was born April 12, 1931, in Blackwell, Okla., the son of John B. and Arlene Richard. He was a graduate of the University of Kansas and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He was a geologist with Standard Oil and Sun Oil companies throughout the southern U.S. He returned to Chanute in 1966 to work on the family farm. In 1968, he established Richard Engineering, and his children were later business partners.
He was former president of Eastern Kansas Oil and Gas Association, and a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
He married Nancy Joan Rush in Chanute on Dec. 26, 1953, and she died Nov. 19, 2000.
He is survived by three sons, Mark of Austin, Texas, Matt of Chanute, and Curtis of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Lisa Mildfelt of Chanute; two brothers, Paul of McClouth and James of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harold Peters officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery on East 14th Street. Johnson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements and services.
Memorials may be made to the City of the Chanute for the Chanute Depot Plaza project, and left in care of the mortuary.
