Alice Yanish, 87, of Bagley, died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the Garden Place in Bagley.

A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bagley with the Rev. Dave Super officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, with a family service at 7 p.m., and one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Bagley.

Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted with the arrangements.

She was born June 4, 1921, to Alfred and Harmy (Raveling) Stensgaard in Craik, Saskatchewan. She lived in Craik until her teens when she immigrated with her family to Buffalo, N.D., where they farmed. She graduated from Buffalo High School in 1938 and received her teaching certificate in Valley City, N.D.

She was dating Robert Yanish and continued to date him while he was in the service. They were married April 14, 1942, while he was stationed in Boise, Idaho. After her husband was honorably discharged, they moved back to Buffalo, where they had an implement dealership. They moved to Climax, Colo., where he worked as a welder and she taught second grade. In 1956, they moved to Bear Creek Township in Minnesota, where they had a farm. She taught at the Alida School for a number of years until her retirement. She moved into the Otterkill Apartments after her husband died in 1998. She then moved into the Garden Place.

She was an active member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where she played the organ until she was in her 80s. She enjoyed playing the piano and teaching piano lessons. She enjoyed knitting, baking and cooking, especially cookies. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Bagley.

She is survived by her son, Bob (Kathy) Yanish of West Fargo, N.D.; daughters, Joanie Brown of Wahpeton, N.D., and Linda (David) Maschwitz of St. Paul; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son-in-law; a sister and two brothers.
