Opal Peterson, 76, of Webster City, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Pete Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and at the church after 11:00 a.m. Friday.

Opal Marie Shannon, daughter of Ross and Mildred Sliefert Shannon, was born October 17, 1929 on a farm near Storm Lake. She received her education in the Storm Lake school system, graduating in 1948. On September 12, 1948, she married James Lyle Peterson at Storm Lake. The couple resided at Albuquerque, NM for five years and Wauregan, IL for 20 years. They retired to Webster City in 1971. Opal had been employed at Farm Journal for 25 years. Mr. Peterson died December 1, 1994. She retied from Farm Journal and continued to reside at Webster City.

Opal is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mavis and Robert Dunlap of Raeford, NC; sons and daughter-in-law, Jay and Julie Peterson of Russell; Jeffery Peterson of Webster City; granddaughters, Stacey Beierle of West Des Moines; Shaunna Dunlap of Raeford, NC; 4 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Gustafson of Spirit Lake; Viola McMann of Perry; LaVerne Mommer of Urbandale; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Jacquelin Peterson in 1956; sister, Yvonne Meyer; brother, Ross Shannon.

She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, was involved in church volunteer work, Eastern Star at Storm Lake, I.O.O.F. of Storm Lake, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and The Red Hat Society.
