On Sunday morning, at his home in this village, Capt. James Dayton, one of the most repected, prominent and widely known residents of this section passed away at the age of 68 years. While he had not been in the best of health for several months past his death came as a great surprize to his many friends, death being attributed to kidney disease.
He is survived by a widow, one son, Ralph B Dayton, assistant cashier of the bank of Port Jefferson, one daughter, Mrs Thomas Fairservis, of Brooklyn, and a brother, John R Dayton, of Echo.
Funeral services were held at his late home on Wednesday afternoon. The Episcopal service was observed and was in charge of Rev William Brush, a brother of the widow, assisted by Rev H S Dunning, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The bearers were: G Frank Bayles, James E Bayles, Capt Chas Alfred Bayles, Prof A B Firman, Joseph Harned and Capt M V B Brewster. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Capt Dayton was born in the house now owned and ocoupied by Wellington Leek, corner of Main and Thompson streets, on July 1, 1840 and was the son of the late Smith and Ruth Dayton. Sailed on the schooner William Penn, Ben Strong, Franklin Bell, Marietta Smith, the Scranton, the Anna Lewis and the Clara Bergen.
Capt Dayton retired from active business about twenty years ago, during which time he has lived quietly at his home in this village.
