With the help of native guide Sluiskin, PB VanTrump and General Hazard Stevens, made the first recorded summit of Mt Rainier in what is now Washington State on August 17, 1870. VanTrump later became an early member of the Sierra Club and accompanied John Muir to the summit of Rainier in 1888. In his later years he was a popular summer guide on Mt Rainier and served as a ranger in the newly formed Mt Rainier National Park.
