The Passing of Dorothy Latrnaquil Ayers Martin
January 10, 2010

Dorothy Latranquil Ayers Martin, known to most as Dot, reunited with her loving husband Wallace Ford Martin yesterday, passing out of this life into the next, on the night of Monday January 4, 2010, of an apparent heart attack. Dot had been well for most of her life, but encountered some health problems a few months ago after the passing of her sister, Virginia Ann Ayers Crocker. She had recently been released from Altus Hospice in Atlanta to a stepdown unit in Marietta, in preparation to return to her home in Toccoa, Georgia.

Dot was the daughter of Plumer Duckett Ayers Sr. of Cornelia, and wife Myrtle Ann Garrison Ayers originally of Banks County, born December 6, 1927. She was the granddaughter of James Thomas Ayers and wife Latranquil Massey Ayers, as well as Benson Bascom Garrison and wife Henrietta Anderson Garrison of Banks County. She is survived by her children Julia Nancy Martin an engineer with Lockheed of Marietta, Georgia, Abby Latranquil Martin Davis a lawyer and mother in Atlanta, and pathologist-attorney Andrew Ayers Martin, M.D., J.D. of Lake Village, Arkansas and Mississippi. She is survived by brother Plumer Ayers Jr. of Habersham County, and sister Peggy Ayers Shannon Rhiner of Milledgeville. She is survived by grandchildren Zack, Drew, and Clay Davis of Atlanta, Malorie Ayers Martin of Houston, Texas, and William Ayers Martin of Jackson, Mississippi.

Dot's life was that of an artist, a creator. Her artistic creations included painting, winning state championships as a quilter, designing sets and making costumes for the local theater in Toccoa, teaching Appalachian Art to students in Tallulah Falls. Her most lasting creation, however, was that of her children, who through her efforts achieved success in many fields and in many ways, both personally and professionally. She single handedly helped her husband Wallace Ford Martin survive a near fatal heart attack in 1963, when the children were toddlers. She nursed him back to health, forced him to stop smokng and changed his diet, allowing him to live until 1985, where he died at home in Toccoa. For her efforts Dot was elected a Toccoa Stephens County mother of the year. She was a Campfire girl leader, a Den mother, a member of the Cherokee Garden Club, a Sunday school teacher, and an expert genealogist. She directed a Ragtime Band at the Methodist Church in Toccoa.

Dot never wished to linger past her time, and enjoyed life, watching ball games and visiting with family until the very end. She laughed, loved, created with an inspirational intensity. She died in Marietta, and will be buried next to her beloved husband Wallace Ford Martin in Toccoa. The funeral services were held at Acree-Davis Funeral Home with burial at Toccoa Cemetery next to husband Wallace Ford Martin.
