In Memory of Wallace Ford Martin: April 3, 2010

Twenty five years ago today my father Wallace Ford Martin died of a heart attack in Toccoa, Georgia, the night before his sixty-ninth birthday. A man of integrity and honor, he believed in building high quality houses at fair prices, helping neighbors and promoting the local economy of his home town, developing numerous subdivisions. He believed in hard work and endless determination, with a "can do" attitude.

A devoted husband, who read his Bible nightly, he raised a lawyer, an electrical engineer, and a doctor lawyer. He started Martin Lumber Company, Martin Cash and Carry, Western Mobile Homes, The Toccoa Plaza Shopping Center. He was citizen of the year for Toccoa several times, and served in Rotary, Kiwaniis, as well as on the Citizens Bank Board of Directors. He loved his wife Dorothy Ayers Martin from their marriage in the 1950's until the time of his death at home with his wife.

He was the first state forest ranger of Georgia, after graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in forestry. He started Martin Lumber Company with his father Zack Martin of Toccoa. He starred in football at Toccoa High School, and played at the University of Georgia. He walked, ran, boxed and jumped rope daily. He was a Deacon and leader at the First Methodist Church. First Lt. Wallace Ford Martin served in Patton's tank corps in World War II, as an instructor at Fort Riley, Kansas at the Armored Cavalry Training School. Just before he was scheduled to ship off to North Africa, a physical revealed cataracts in his eyes, preventing him from engaging in combat with the rest of his comrades, but allowing him to serve in a training capacity. He died at home twenty five years ago on April 3, 1985.

I am blessed that God allowed Wallace Ford Martin to have been my father.

Andrew Ayers Martin, M.D., J.D. son of Dot and Wallace.
