The Rev. Richard P. Cooke of 1085 Herbert Allen Trail, South Boston died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Duke University Medical Center at the age of 74.

He was born in Fountain, N.C. on June 10, 1936, a son of the late Richard Allen Cooke and Ora Virginia Moore who survives.

He was a retired Baptist minister.

The Rev. Cooke was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church, the Aarons Creek Ruritan Club and the Virgilina Masonic Lodge.

He served as pastor of the following churches in Virginia and North Carolina: Sedley Baptist Church, North Pamunkey Baptist Church, Mount Tabor Baptist Church and Aarons Creek Baptist Church.

After his retirement, he served at a number of Halifax County Baptist churches as interim pastor.

In addition to his mother of Toano, he is survived by his wife, Gloria D. "Phyliss" Cooke of South Boston; one daughter, Gloria Ellen Cooke Crute and her husband, Leonard Glenn Crute, of Nathalie; one grandson, J. Adam Pittman; one granddaughter, Rachel Pittman; one brother, Jerry David Cooke and his wife, Norma, of Croaker; one sister, Robin Lynn Rutherford and her husband, Scott, of Toano; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Allen Cooke.

A funeral for the Rev. Richard P. Cooke will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Aarons Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward Ellis and the Rev. Vance Midgett officiating.

Burial will follow in the Aarons Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Family visitation will be held at Aarons Creek Baptist Church on Monday, Nov. 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home.
