Jean Hallan 1919-2007

Jean (Torkildson) Hallan, 88, of Bagley, died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at Clearwater County Memorial Hospital in Bagley.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 21, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Bagley, with Pastor Rick Moore officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Cease Family Funeral Home in Bagley. Interment will be at Bagley City Cemetery.
Jean was born March 21, 1919 in Glyndon, Minnesota, the daughter of Gustav and Ethel Rosalind (Barron) Torkildson. In 1928, at the age of nine, she moved with her parents to Minerva Township south of Bagley; and attended school there through eighth grade. Jean graduated from Bagley High School in 1937.
Jean attended French's Business School in Bemidji the following year. She worked in Fargo at Ackerman's Realty for five years and later worked one year in Bismarck, North Dakota for Winston-Newell as a secretary.
Jean married Army 2nd Lt. Vernon Hallan on March 9, 1943 at Congregational Church in Bagley, where Spencer Bower was the pastor. The following day they left for Camp Stewart, Georgia. In June 1943, Vern received his orders for overseas and Jean came home to Bagley and worked at the Welfare office at the Courthouse. Vern came home December of 1945 and received his discharge in March 1946 as a Captain.
Jean loved children and delighted in her many years of teaching Sunday school and release time classes. She loved telling Bible stories with enthusiasm and expression. For years she carried this little poem in her billfold: "Ten years from now, it won't matter what car I drove, what kind of a house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank, nor what my clothes looked like, But the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child."
Jean's "gift" was hospitality and their home was often full with foster children, foreign exchange students, missionaries, and relatives. Both Vern and Jean loved the Lord and loved people.
She is survived by four children and their spouses, Jim (Carol) of Warroad, David (Muff Magelssen) of Bagley, Stephen (Becky) of Pine City and Mary (Gary) Daniels of Warroad; one sister, Vivian Torkildson of Bagley; 10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Vernon, sister Enid and her brother Keith, who died on December 18, 1944 while in the Navy during WW II.
The Cease Family Funeral Home in Bagley assisted the family with arrangements.
