David was a Union Soldier during the Civil War having enlisted on 9 September 1862 in Company G, 22nd Regiment of Iowa Infantry. He was described at the time of enlistment as being five feet eight inches in height, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair and by occupation a stone cutter. Official records show that David was wounded near Winchester, Virginia, on 19 September 1864 and was in an army general hospital until 28 February 1865. He was discharged as a sergeant on 25 July 1865 at Savannah, Georgia, David's half brother, George Hoblitzell Shockey, was a captain commanding Company G.
