Hufford Family Genealogist

Franklin authored and produced the 1909 HUFFORD FAMILY HISTORY, the genealogical history of the descendants of Christian HOFFARTH (b. 1716 in Schwaigern, Germany).

Franklin spent ten years researching and collecting family information to include in the 269-page book. The book includes photographs of most families and information about occupations and church affiliations.

When the book was published, Franklin admitted that he had spent $2,000 in his effort to put together the book. If so, his cost in 2009 dollars would have been $45,616.

The book was a labor of love for Franklin. He supported his family by other means. In 1900, he was farming in Howard County, Indiana. In 1910, he was in Indianapolis working as a carpenter. In 1920, he was in Indianapolis working as a "jitney helper" for an "express company."

From page 52 of the 1909 HUFFORD FAMILY HISTORY, this was Franklin's own description of himself:

"Our subject was born in Fairfield County, in a log house on his father's farm, being his grandfather's old homestead, two miles south of Bremen, Ohio. He received a common school education, and at the age of 19 years began to teach vocal music in his home school district. In his 21st year, on August 18, 1879, he joined the German-Baptist church and was baptized by Rev. D. N. Workman, of Ashland, Ohio. He was employed by his father until October 11, 1880, when he left for Illinois, where he engaged in gathering corn. In 1881, he was employed at farm labor by Rev. John Arnold, his first cousin. In 1882, he was married. He located one mile north of Lintner, Illinois. He built a house and moved in one mile further north on his own farm. He lived there until February 1896. He sold his farm to John Wyne, his brother-in-law, and bought a farm in Howard County, Indiana, 160 acres, where he lived until 1902. He then sold and bought three miles west of Indianapolis, Indiana, a farm of 160 acres, where he lived for two years. He then sold and moved to a new addition of the city of Indianapolis, living a retired farmer's life."

He was the son of Philemon HOFFERT (1829-1895) and Catharine SEITZ (1830-1899). His siblings were Levi, Alexander, Daniel, Chloe (m. WOLF), Bentley, and Andrew.

Franklin married Elizabeth WYNE January 19, 1882, in Piatt County, Illinois. Five children were born to the union: John Wesley, Katie Ellen (m. SUTPHIN), Harvey B., a baby girl who died as an infant, and Lena P. (m. WOODWARD).
