Celebration of Life services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly Road and Jersey Ridge, Davenport. The Rev. Michael Armstrong will officiate. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island, where military honors will be provided by Davenport American Legion Post 26.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Our House Preschool in care of First Christian Church, Davenport.
John was born in Guthrie, Okla., in 1944, a son of Ernest and Minerva Latchaw. He served in the U.S. Air Force for seven years, attaining the rank of captain. He earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology in systems analysis. In 1988, John was united in marriage to Patti Bufe at First Christian Church in Davenport.
After receiving his honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force, John began his career as a mathematician at the Rock Island Arsenal in 1975. He retired in 1995.
He was an active member of First Christian Church in Davenport, where he had served as elder, chairman of the board and as a Sunday school teacher. He also was active in the Chancel Choir, the Bell Choir and Disciples Men's Fellowship. He had received recognition as Lay Person of the Year in 2005.
Also a sports enthusiast, John enjoyed playing baseball and was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed woodworking, restoring Corvairs and keeping his mind sharp with crossword and Sudoku puzzles.
Survivors include his wife, Patti, of Davenport; daughter, Barbara Latchaw and son, Graham Latchaw, both of Davenport; a brother, Bennie Joe (Pat) Latchaw, Indianapolis, Ind., and their family; and a cousin, Vonda Latchaw, Oklahoma City, Okla. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Linda.
