Russell G. Exley, 80, of East Orleans, and formerly of Longmeadow, a longtime Boy Scout executive, died Tuesday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the executive director of the Pioneer Valley Boy Scout Council from 1953 to 1978.

During his leadership, the council membership rose from 4,300 Scouts in 1953 to a high mark of 12,000 in the late 1960s.

Born and schooled in Providence, R.I., he was graduated from Brown University in 1937.

He was an Eagle Scout, a scoutmaster and field executive in the Narragansett, R.I., and Hackensack, N.J., Scout Councils, and a graduate of the National Scout Executives Training School.

He also headed the Berkshire BSA Council.

He lived in Hackensack, N.J., Providence, R.I., and Pittsfield, and moved to Longmeadow in 1953. He lived here from 1978.

He was a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II.

He attended the Church of the Holy Spirit, and had been a communicant, lay reader, and chalicer at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Longmeadow.

He coached Little League baseball for many years.

His wife, Jane (Collyer) Exley, died in 1994.

He leaves a son, William R. of Portland, Maine; two daughters, Anne Martinson of Billerica, and Susan Lefferts of Nashville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren.

Another son, Steven, died in 1962.

The funeral will be Friday morning at the Church of the Holy Spirit, and the burial will be on Saturday afternoon at Longmeadow Cemetery .

There are no calling hours, and Nickerson Funeral Home of Orleans is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pioneer Valley BSA Council, 861 Meadow St., Chicopee, 01013.
