Oregon Governor. Admitted to the bar in 1850, he moved to Oregon, in 1851, established a law firm in Scottsburg and was the town's first postmaster. He was elected the first Judge of Douglas County, served as Assistant U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of Oregon and was one of the original directors of the Oregon Central Railroad Company. In 1870, he was elected Oregon Secretary of State and when Governor LaFayette Grover resigned to take a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1877, Chadwick was inaugurated as a Democrat the 5th Governor of Oregon, serving until 1878. While in office, he helped white settlers in a conflict with the Bannock Indians that ended with his insistence that friendly Indian chiefs surrender those who had been involved, ultimately leading to the state's prosecution and hanging of nine Indians. Declining a second term, he returned to practicing law until his death at age 69.
