Oscar Edwin Norbo was born in Monroe county, Wisconsin in 1876 to Norwegian immigrant parents. In the waning years of the 1890's, Oscar and his brother, Oliver, left the family farm, never to return. They changed their last name to Evans in honor of their father, Even, and because it sounded more American than Norbo or so they thought. In Shenandoah, Iowa, they met and married 2 sisters, Selma Serafia and Jennie Charlotte Salstrand. The two families moved on to California where they lived for the rest of their lives.
The brothers were skilled in the building trades and continued construction work in San Francisco where Oscar owned his own construction company, O. E. Evans & Co. (Inc.), located at 2569 Mission Street. Apparently Oliver wanted to get back to farming, so he left with his family for Southern California where he was able to buy a farm.
