Nolan F. Zugschwerdt age 92 of Maquoketa Iowa died on Friday July 24, 2009 at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa Iowa. His lifelong home was 405 W. Quarry and his farm at Chadwick Illinois.

A celebration of his life will be held at 5 P.M. Friday July 312009.0 from the Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa with a Masonic Service being conducted by Helion Lodge #36 AF & AM of Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 P.M. on Friday July 31, 2009. with a memorial service and reception to follow at 5 P.M. from the Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa Iowa. Burial will be at the Chadwick Illinois Cemetery at a later date.

Nolan F. "Zug" Zugschwerdt was born on June 13, 1917 in Chadwick, Illinois to Elmer H. Zugschwerdt and Emma (Frank) Zugschwerdt. He was a 1935 graduate of Chadwick Illinois High School and then graduated from Iowa State University in 1939 with a degree in Agronomy and a minor in Education. He married Leah Ellen Youtzy on July 11 1941 in Cedar Rapids Iowa. She preceded him in death on November 30 2005.

Zug first worked as a teacher at Olin High School for two years. He then moved to Maquoketa and from 1943 to 1958 he was the Vocational Agriculture teacher at the Maquoketa High School. In 1958 he became co-owner and operator of the B & Z Feed Mill in Maquoketa retiring in 1975. He also initiated an agriculture night school program in Maquoketa during the 1960's.

Zug was a member of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa Iowa State Alumni Association Maquoketa Rotary Club Izaak Walton League serving as a past president and treasurer and had been a former Barbershop Quartet Society member. For many years he had been an active member of the Maquoketa Masonic Helion Lodge #36 AF & AM serving as past Worshipful Master. He also was a member of the KAABA Shrine Maple Leaf Chapter and the Sternwheelers. Zug enjoyed trout fishing, stamp collecting, cross stitching, furniture refinishing, traveling, barbershop singing, and was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. Zug was a strong believer in family and conservation. He and the Spaulding family turned his family centennial farm in Chadwick into a conservation project putting lots of energy effort and love creating a family retreat.

"Zug" Zugschwerdt is survived by his children Craig (Diane) Zugschwerdt of Arlington, VA; Steve (Dee Dee) Zugschwerdt of Belfair WA; and Nancy (Larry) Spaulding of Chadwick IL; and 5 grandchildren: Eli, Zach, Emmett, Sarah, and Carson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother William, and a sister Marjorie.

A Nolan F. "Zug" Zugschwerdt memorial fund has been established.

Nolan will be missed by his lifelong friends and family.
