According to the History of Howard and Chariton Counties:

"Francis S Brammer was born on the farm in 1838. He was the fourth of ten children of James Brammer of Virginia (D 1863 Linn Co, Mo)and Martha Burnett Brammer of Kentucky (D 1854, Linn Co, Mo). The family came to Missouri the year that Francis was born and settled in Macon County, where they would live for 14 years. Francis attended county schools and would often walk four miles to school. In 1852 the family moved to Linn County. His mother, Martha, died in 1854, and his father, James, in 1863.

Francis was an industrious farmer and raised cattle and pigs. In 1859, Francis married Mary Ann Cloud. The two had two children, Martha Jane and Edmond L, and were married 15 years before she passed away. In 1875, Francis married Mary Ann Winner, originally from Ohio. The marriage produced four children, Alonzo, Emma, Jesse, and Harriett."
