He attended Castle Heights Military Academy in Tennessee, the University of Texas, and Southern Methodist University. He served in WWI as a U.S. Army Engineer in France from 1917-1918. He became a licensed land surveyor, working for Atlantic Oil & Refining Company from 1923-1926, the Texas Highway Department from 1919-1922 and again from 1926-1929, and as a self employed oil field engineer from 1929-1956. He and his wife lived in Ranger and Paris, Texas, on an oil lease near Olney, in Wichita Falls, in Rio Grande City, and finally in 1929 they moved to San Antonio until his death. On the 1930 Census, he was listed in San Antonio, Texas with his wife Gladys, sons Seymour and Aikin, and daughter Martha.
