In the death of Mrs. Emma Downelly (sic) which occurred last Sunday morning, we have one of the saddest events which ever happened in our city. She was the mother of eleven children, eight of whom and her husband survive her. She had been afflicted with asthma for years and her husband has spent a small fortune in traveling over the country to find a climate favorable to that troublesome disease.
They came to Fullerton about six weeks ago from Kansas and Mrs. Downelly was sick from their arrival. They were almost entire strangers to all in this community and yet the response of sympathy and help, when the citizens learned of their need, was indeed wonderful. The children are young and will greatly miss the mother's care and love of her who is gone. The manner and bearing, and touching sorrow of the family showed more plainly than words that Mrs. Downelly had been a good, exemplary woman and mother, and had so impressed her character on her family that the children will rise up and call her blessed. The father and sons are both honest and industrious and will succeed in this community where these qualities are recognized and prized more highly than gold.
A large number of the best citizens attended the funeral and manifested their interest in and sorrow for the afflicted family. The funeral exercises were held in the M. E. church Monday at 1:30 P.M.
Mrs. Downelly was born in Knox Co., Ohio. She had been married 22 years on the day of her death. She was 42 years old.
We bespeak the sympathy and help if needed of the community for this bereaved family.
