The 1880 Census has a Charles Hume with a home in Grand Pass Twp., Saline County, Missouri. His age is 45 with an estimated birth year of about 1835. His birthplace as well as that of his parents was Virginia, and his spouse's name was Mary A. (Kirtley). His occupation was farmer, race was white and he could not read or write. Household Members were: Charles age 45, Mary A. age 41, Emmette Hume age 16, Milton J. Hume age 11, Lauri Hume age 8, Mary Hume (Mamie) age 6, and Charles Hume age 2. Charles' farm was a couple of miles SE of Malta Bend, MO. Mamie had a brother Robert William Hume (1881-1941) and he was the Saline County sheriff in the 1870s although he was not living at home in 1880.

Charles Hume

Charles Hume, 79-years-old, died at his home, 2 1/2 miles southeast of Malta Bend, Saturday, November 8, at 11:30 p.m., of general debility, he having been in ill health for some months. Mr. Hume is a pioneer of the country and was well and favorably known.

Mr. Hume is survived by two sons, Robert and Charles Hume, Mrs. Ed. Hutcherson and Lula Hillebrand, all of Saline county.

Mr. Hume was a devote member of the Baptist church.

The funeral service took place Monday at Union church west of Marshall at 11 a.m. and interment was at Union cemetery.

P.M. Walker, mortician, had charge of the funeral arrangements.
