Victor (Vic) C. Melendy was born and brought up in Billerica MA. Attended local schools and married his high school sweetheart Carol. Victor served his country in the U.S. Navy. When he returned from military service he settled in Stoughton and became a member of the Stoughton Fire Department on August 20‚ 1972. Vic was the very proud father of three children Christopher‚ Lisa‚ and Kerry. Vic was also a licensed electrician.
Vic was an active member of local 1512 IAFF holding many offices within the union. He was also active in the town especially with Special Olympics and the Fourth of July Children's activities. (If you weren't working for the above-mentioned activities you better be at the field working next to Vic.) He was an active member of the Welsh Preserve – a conservation area of the town.
Vic collected model trucks and had an extensive collection. He was also an avid baseball card collector and attended many shows. Vic's favorite vehicle was his Volkswagen beetle‚ especially when he would get ready to leave the station after his duty tour and find his car shrink wrapped in plastic or the tires taken off the car.
At the time of his tragic death‚ he was a 23-year veteran of the department. He had served his country and his community with the utmost care and commitment. On the tragic morning of January 28‚ 1995 at 0431 hours he gave the ultimate to his community‚ his life during a search and rescue operation. The search took place in a rooming house with a report of occupants trapped.
Vic was a friend first and a colleague to all of us on the department. He was always the first to help with a problem on or off the job.
Even after his death we all still learn from this tragedy. Victor opened a door for us to look at the way we do our job on the department. And that is to strive to be safe as we do our job.
Victor was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously at the Firefighter of the Year Awards ceremony held in Massachusetts the following year. This award was presented for the actions taken during the search and rescue operation. He was also awarded the prestigious Medal of Valor from the International Association of Fire Fighters.
