Reba was born June 9, 1926 in Grand Junction, Colo. to Ruby Thurston and James A. Goss. She attended school in Fruita and graduated from Fruita High School in 1944. She married LaMar Hawkins in Vernal in 1947, where the couple raised their children: Rick, Greg, and Marcy Lou.
Reba's children were the light of her life, and many of her happiest years were spent encouraging and supporting them in numerous activities through high school, college, and beyond. When her grandchildren were born, she began the most cherished journey of her life into "Grand-motherhood" – she was no longer "Reba", but became the cherished "Gran" to her grandchildren, great grandchildren and everyone else.
Reba was a talented artist and enjoyed working for several years arranging flowers. Even after she no longer worked in a florist shop, she would often stop to "rearrange" the flowers at Davis IGA or wherever else she saw arrangements that were just not "quite right."
Reba also worked as a Pink Lady for several years at Ashley Valley Medical Center, where she gained many dear friends and where her great sense of humor helped ease the pain and suffering of patients and families. She truly loved her work there.
Reba leaves behind numerous good friends and will be most remembered for her uncommon ability to laugh at whatever curves life threw her and her ability to find the true joy in the "little things" in life: "Life should not be a journey to the grave, With the intention of arriving safely in an attractive, And well-preserved body, but rather, To skid in sideways, Champagne in one hand, Strawberries in the other, Body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming, WOO HOO! - WHAT A RIDE!"
Services for Reba were held Saturday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. at the Vernal Assembly of God Church with internment in the Rock Point Cemetery, under the direction of the Vernal Blackburn Mortuary.
