SOUTH DENNIS, Mass. -- Richard Weston Caswell ("Dick") died peacefully in his home in South Dennis surrounded by family and attended to by his wife Peggy.Born April 21, 1930, he was the oldest child of L. Merrill and Ruth Caswell.He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Margaret "Peggy" (Kelly). Loving father to Kelly Seip and son-in-law, Jon, Christopher Caswell and daughter-in-law, Kathy (Sears), Catherine Caswell and son-in-law, Arturo Lombre, Kevin Caswell and Mary Vagenas.Proud Poppa to grandchildren Daniel and Conor Seip, Corey and Kayla Caswell, Benjamin (PVE2) and Brianna Caswell. Brother to Lee Hollis (Caswell), Earl Caswell and wife Linda, Marjorie Lubelczyk (Caswell) and husband, Raymond, Patricia Caswell and husband, John Gorman and special brother-in-law James M. Kelly.Dick's childhood and formative years were spent in West Bridgewater, Mass., and summers in Wareham, Mass. Upon graduation from Howard High School, he served as a private in the U.S. Army Reserve for six months.Deciding he would rather risk time on the sea, than on land with snakes, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After 3-1/2 years and two round the world cruises on the aircraft carrier Tarawa, he was honorably discharged with rank of AT3, Aviation Technician.Taking advantage of the GI bill he enrolled in Springfield College and received a B.S. degree in Education followed by a Masters degree in Vocational Rehabilitation. His first professional employment was in the Greenwich, New York school system as a guidance counselor. In 1960, he left Greenwich to take a position as the School Psychologist with the Hudson Falls Central School District where he remained for 28 years.He retired in 1985, setting up permanent residence in South Dennis, Mass. (Cape Cod).Dick led an active life and especially enjoyed activities with family and friends. Fall weekends were spent hunting in the Adirondacks, winter was cross country skiing. Summers were spent at their summer home on Cape Cod fondly known as "Caswell's Cottage." He could be found reading on the porch or in the hammock, sitting on the beach or making birdhouses, bookends or furniture in his wood shop. He and Peggy loved to travel, spending time in Brazil, South Carolina, Arizona and Nova Scotia and an occasional trip to Las Vegas. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Dennis Pines and Highland Golf Courses and the Retired Mens Club.Dick touched the lives of many. He was a loving and kind person who was never afraid to speak his mind. He enriched our lives and will be missed.Rest in Peace.A memorial Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of The Cape Parish, 468 Stony Brook Road, Brewster, Mass., on Friday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m.A private burial will be held at the Bourne National Military Cemetary at a later date.In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Our Lady of The Cape Memorial Fund or The VNA Hospice, 434 Route 134, South Dennis MA 02660.
