Curtis Patterson grew up on his father's farm. He rode ponies, then later horses to school in Mr. Pleasant. He graduated from high school in 1917. He then began college in 1918 at Bethany College in West Virginia while serving in the Army. He was honorably discharged at WWI's end - a few months after starting at Bethany.

He drove to California in a Model T Ford with a a caravan of six cars in October 1919, taking six weeks to get there. Paved roads stopped at St. Louis. Because there were not motels, they slept in tents. They also had to drain radiators on cold nights, because anti-freeze did not exist. While in California he attended Whittier College during the spring semester of 1920.

After returning home, he attended Ohio State University starting in the fall of 1920 for 2 years and 2 quarters, majoring in Civil Engineering. On August 28, 1925 he married Sarah Ann McMillan.

He worked for the coal mines surveying property and tunnesl near Adnea, Ohio. Next he worked for Hocking Valley R.R. which was later purchased by the Chesapeake and Ohio R.R. From 1931 to 1966 (35 years) he worked for the Department of Highways, State of Ohio.

The family lived in Cadiz, OH, until 1937 when they moved to New Philadelphia, OH.

As told to Grandson Lloyd C. Patterson by Curtis and Sarah Patterson on August 21, 1979
