Alvan H Libby was born in Jay, Maine Aprl 14, 1834. He was the son of Asa Libby (1797-1874) and Lucy Cushman House (1805-1847) he was one of 10 children. Asa is in the 1850 census for Manchester, NH but there is no mention of Alvan.

This writer was unclear as to what rank to put down for Adjt. Libby as Adjt is not listed in titles. He enlisted in the New Hampshire 3rd Regiment, Company A on 31 Jul, 1861 at the rank of 1st Lt. and was promoted to Full Adjutant of 15 Apl 1862.

He "fell" at Fort Wagner, South Carolina on 18 Jul 1863. He was 29 years old. It appears from pension records that his wife Lizzie E. Libby received a pension as well as a minor child. This writer cannot locate any census records for his family.

Adjt. Libby is not buried in the Valley Cemetery, however there is a large momument there erected on his father's lot. It states, "Erected by the officers of the 3rd NH Voluntees as a token of respect. Adjt Alvan H. Libby who "fell" on Wagner, July 1863 age 29 years 3 months."
