The funeral of Alan E. Rich, 72, of 25 Berwick Road, a Navy aviation hero and environmental activist, will be conducted Saturday afternoon at Hafey East Longmeadow Chapels, with burial in Longmeadow Cemetery .

He died Monday at home.

Calling hours are Saturday afternoon before the funeral.

He was a Navy aviator in World War II, and served in the Pacific theater as both a scout pilot and night fighter pilot. He retired with the rank of commander.

He received the Air Medal for meritorious achievements while flying an observation plane at Tarawa on Nov. 19, 1943, and Maloelap on Jan. 29, 1944.

He was chairman of the Connecticut River Improvement Council, and spent many years in the bid contract business, specializing in kitchens for multiple housing units. He was also involved with science-room and library equipment for schools.

He was president of Interior Design Contract Management Co. (IDCO).

He held a patent on a marine depth indicator used for navigational and industrial use.

Born in Worcester, he lived in this town for 46 years.

A past commodore and honorary life member of the Springfield Yacht Club, he was a historian of the Connecticut River.

He was also a ham radio operator.

He leaves his wife of 49 1/2 years, the former Pamela Heap; three daughters, Pamela J. Rich of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Cynthia Wilson of East Longmeadow, and Susan Flynn of Killingworth, Conn.; a sister, Virginia Giaquinto of Springfield; a brother, Robert W. of Ludlow, and five grandchildren.
