Drum Major of the New Hamphire Infantry, Francis Harvey Pike had quite a history of enlisting in the Civil War. He first enrolled 5 Feb 1861 in the 1st New Hampshire Infantry Regiment, Company S, he was mustered out 9 Aug 1861, he re-enlisted in New Hampshire's 4th Regiment, Company S, 18 Sept 1861 and was mustered out 16 Sept 1862. Apparently his love of enlisting stuck again as he enlisted in NH 2nd Bridg. 10th Corps Infantry Band on 30 Mar 1863 and was mustered out 4 July 1865 in Concord at the end of the War.
In the book "Men of Granite" authored by Duanne E Shaffer, on page 26 reads that during his first enlistment with the New Hampshire 1st, "The first test of the new regiment was during its passage through Baltimore, 5/27/61 the NH 1st the march was tense, etc.... previous Union marches resulted in tempers flared along the route, bricks and bottles thrown... Francis H Pike the drum major of the 1st "Saxy" wore a guady uniform of light blue pants and a double breasted blue coat with brass buttons connected across the chest by gold cords, a black shako hat with a peacock feather and waving a large silver headed baton. He played yankee doodle dandy and the nh 1st was the first regiment to pass through the City without incident.

"Saxie" was born 10/1/1824, married Mary Lucretia Sholes 12/25/1842, she died 4/18/1888, it is believed they had 6 children. After the war he worked building locomotives. His lot in the Valley, has an "unknown infant". He lived with his youngest daughter until his death on 12/10/1903.
