Paul Watson Grove, 91, formerly of Williamsburg, passed away Saturday afternoon at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, after a brief illness.

He was born in Williamsburg, son of the late William H. and Emma J. (Starr) Grove. He married his high school sweetheart, Beulah E. Clabaugh, on April 7, 1943, at Zion Lutheran Church, Williamsburg.

Surviving are his wife; two sons: Wayne P. and wife, Norma, and Stanley R. and wife, Lou Ann, all of the Williamsburg area; five grandchildren: Kenneth Grove, Brenda Crouch, Dr. Trina Michael, Dr. Trisha Myers and Lisa Brumbaugh; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers: Blair, Ernest, Harold, Ralph and Thomas; and a sister, Grace Loose.

Paul attended Catharine Township Elementary School and was a 1938 graduate of Williamsburg High School. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as an engine mechanic instructor at the AAC Technical Training Command Mechanical School, Seymour Johnson Field, Goldsboro, N.C. After his honorable discharge, he worked at Westvaco, Williamsburg plant, as a millwright and then was employed at Boyer Candy Co., Altoona, as a maintenance coordinator.

An active member of the community, Paul began his many years of service with the Boy Scouts of America, where he served as committeeman of Troop No. 53 for 20 years. He received the Lamb Award for Outstanding Service to Youth. He served as director and president of both Williamsburg school board and Blair County Board of School Directors. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he held office for about 40 years and was a delegate at the annual conference of the synod 37 times. Paul was a former member and past president of Williamsburg Borough Council for 10 years and also the Williamsburg Municipal Authority. He served as treasurer for the Rails to Trails of Central PA and Williamsburg Area Improved Dwellings. Mr. Grove was previously named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Williamsburg Lions Club. He was a member of Juniata Lodge No. 282, F&AM, Hollidaysburg, for more than 60 years. He formerly served on the board of Williamsburg Heritage and Historical Society. In 1990, Paul and his wife were elected king and queen of the Williamsburg bicentennial event.

In his spare time, Paul enjoyed computers, gardening, woodworking and oil painting, especially bald eagles. He had a passion for his family genealogy and had formerly served as president of Blair County Genealogical Society, individually creating a database of more than 8,000 cemetery entries. More than 10 years ago, he wrote, "It is most gratifying to be in a position to be able to serve our fellow men in so many ways. When I think about slowing down to what I should be doing at almost 80 years old, the question always comes to mind ... 'WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?' Then I go and volunteer again."

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, where a funeral service with military flag honors will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, officiated by Pastor Tiffany E. Marvich.

Private interment will follow at Williamsburg Lutheran Cemetery.

Arrangements are by John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Williamsburg.
