Death of Mr. Mitchell Baxley - On last Tuesday morning, 01-30-1917, at 6 o'clock Mr. Mitchell Baxley closed his eyes in eternal sleep. He was born 01-14-1830 and at the time of his death was a little over 87 years of age. He has spent practically all his life in Appling Co. During the Civil War he served his country as a faithful and fearless soldier. For the past four years he has been confined to his bed unable to help himself. During this period of illness he has borne his sufferings with Christian faith, fortitude, and hope only as a true soldier of the Cross could be sustained. Only about 12 months ago his life companion, Mrs. Martha Baxley, preceded him to the grave. Mr. Mitchell Baxley was a member of the Friendship Congregational Church where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. N. Smith. A large concourse of people from the comunity in which he lived and from Baxley were present to pay the last sad rites. The remains were interred in Baxley Graveyard, Wednesday morning. Mr. Baxley is survived by 8 children, three sons and five daughters of this county, Messrs. J. L W., S. W., and M. A. Baxley; Mesdames. Martha Padgett, Elizabeth Beach, Mary Cleland, Lou Rainey Carter and Allie Bullard. The bereaved have the sympathy of the entire community in this sad hour.
