Alphonse (Alfonse) Gautherat was born May 24, 1875 in France to Denis and Kathern (Lhote) Gatherat. In 1918, when he registered for the draft, he declared he was a citizen of Alsace. When he applied for a social security number in 1937, he indicated that his birthplace was now the Federal Republic of Germany.

Mr. Gautherat first immigrated to America in 1898 and declared he was coming to visit a cousin/uncle in Toledo, Ohio. He was 23 years old.

He made his home in Saginaw, Michigan. He married Estella McCoy and the couple had a son, Emile, in 1906. She died that year. He then married his wife's sister, Nan McCoy in 1907 and they had a son, Merle.

Mr. Gatherat visited family in Valdieur, France in 1920. He listed a brother-in-law, Emile Theibaut of Valdieur as his next of kin in his home country.

He and Nan divorced in 1930. He remained in Saginaw and died there on April 29, 1940 at the age of 63 years. [bio by Margie von Marenholtz]
