The son (adopted according to his obituary in a Gettysburg newspaper) of Abraham
& Maria Barbara (Hornberger) Tawney, he married Sarah Boblitz and fathered Rufus
Abraham (b. 03/05/53), James Albertus (b. 01/03/55 - U.S. Congressman, MN), Mary
Elizabeth (b. 05/04/57 - married Charles Bullard), Daniel Elmer (b. 07/17/60),
Sarah Barbara (b. 03/17/63 - married John Augustus Lefferts), and Emma Katherine
"Kate" (b. 10/??/64 - married Charles H. Meservey). In 1860, he was a farmer
(later a blacksmith) living in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County,
Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 6" tall with dark hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered
into federal service at Gettysburg November 5 as a private with Co. G, 165th
Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to 1st sergeant December 3, and honorably discharged with his
company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.
Sarah died in 1866 and he married Annie M. McKellip, fathering William (b.
@1868), Ellen Brannon "Ella" (b. 07/07/69), Adell L. "Addie" (b. 07/23/71 -
married Frank J. Hills), John Ephraim (b. 03/15/73), Charles Allen (b.
10/08/74), George Oterbein (b. 12/15/78, d. 01/15/80), Oliver Erving or Irvin
(b. 10/18/80), and Paul Edgar (b. 08/??/82). In 1879, he moved his family to
Nebraska where he remained for the rest of his life.
