Edward Leo Apodaca, 55, affectionately known as "coach," lost the greatest fight of his life to cancer April 26, 2002. Ed was born Dec. 13, 1946, in Trinidad. He was educated in Pueblo schools and served his country during the Vietnam Conflict as a member of the 82nd Airborne Rangers and the 25th Infantry. His decorations included National Defense Service Medal Expert Rifle Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. Ed loved traveling, fishing, hunting and playing bones "dominoes." He was a dedicated Broncos fan. Most of all, he loved boxing and spending time with all his grandchildren. Ed was the coach of the Pueblo Stylers boxing team, which produced several state, regional and national champions. He served as president of Colorado USA Boxing and also was known as "the voice of the Rockies" at ringside, announcing the fighters and their events. He was a board member of the former CYO. He loved to go to yard sales and shopping with his girls. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Theresa Bravo Apodaca; children, Pamela (Teddy) Jaquez, Edward "Son" (Gina) Apodaca, Cheryl (Santos) Casarez and Carol (Leo) Lopez; his mother, Julia Sandoval; siblings, Ronnie (Barbara) Sandoval, Rudy (Carlie) Sandoval and Ramona Gonzales; father and mother-in-law, Sabino and Nellie Bravo; brothers-in-law, Ciriaco "Jimmy" (Kathy) Bravo and Willie (Maria) Bravo; sisters-in-law, Rose (Larry) Alexander and Gloria Treijo; godfather, Joe Apodaca; 11 grandchildren; numerous godchildren; and other relatives and friends. Ed is preceded in death by grandparents, Julius and Daisy Apodaca; father, Rudolph Sandoval; and brother-in-law, Benedito Bravo. Visitation, noon until 6 p.m. today and noon until 4 p.m. Monday, Angelus Chapel. Rosary vigil, 7 p.m. Monday. Funeral Mass, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Rev. Ben Bacino, celebrant. Both services, St. Leander Catholic Church. Full military honors at graveside, Roselawn Cemetery, by Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team. The Apodaca family will receive friends at St. Leander Hall following the burial rites.
