Mr. Kennett was the son of William C. Kennett & Julia S. Clapp Kennett of Greene County, Illinois. The founders of this very large family came up the Mississippi River from New Orleans just before 1800, bringing scores of slaves. In real & imaginative ways, they were instrumental in building the area around St. Louis.

They secured Spanish land grants in the Ozark Mountains of SE Missouri, then mined iron, lead & limestone. Their fleet of side-wheel steamboats was perhaps as large as that of any other large family. They carried, bought & sold slaves. They were successful for many generations. It is not unusual to find a son living in the West, as this gentleman did. Dozens of daughters married Eastern gentlemen from fine families & raised children who raised others which are successful to this day. --Anna Jaech
