Mr. and Mrs. William H. Gaffney, of 6104 S. Monitor av., were informed last night that their son, Lance Cpl. Michael F. Gaffney, 20, was killed in action in South Viet Nam on July 29.

His father said Gaffney's platoon was part of the 9th Marine Regimnet which was mauled in an ambush by North Vietnamese regulars as the unit returned from a mission in the demilitarized zone. Gaffney's company was clear of the ambush, they returned to aid the rest of the unit and were hit by heavy artillery fire.

A 1966 graduate of Lindblom High school he enlisted in the Marines last August and arrived in Viet Nam March 26. He wrote his parents that there "was a place for him over here and he had a job that was necessary to do." He also is survived by a brother; William, Jr., 22 and a sister; Mary Ann, 14.
