Sarah Branum's Confederate Widow Pension Application lists James' death date as May 19, 1916. However, in 1910 Sarah is a widow and living with her daughter, Betty. In James' pension application there are letters indicating that Sarah continued cashing James' pension vouchers long after his death and the last voucher was returned without being cashed in 1916. She then applied for a widow's pension and listed a death date that would not implicate that she continued collecting his pension vouchers after his death. James apparently died sometime before April 15, 1910, the date the 1910 Census was taken.
