Mr. John Edwin McCraw, 85, Walterboro, entered into his eternal rest Monday afternoon, December 13, 2010, at his residence.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon, December 16, 2010, from Bethel Baptist Church, 3481 Sydneys Road, Walterboro with The Reverend Steve Crosby officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the churchyard. The casket will be placed in the church Wednesday evening, and family and friends are invited to call at the church that evening from 6 o'clock until 8 o'clock.

Mr. McCraw was born July 31, 1925, in Gastonia, North Carolina, and was a son of the late Fred Oliver McCraw and the late Selma Bostic McCraw.

He served his country in the United States Navy having served during World War II aboard the USS Chara. He then worked for the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he retired as a General Foreman. He was also a part-time instructor having taught machining at the Trident Technical Institute.

He was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Chruch where he was a member of the Deacon Board and the building and grounds committee, as well as having been active in many other aspects of the church's work. For many years he was heavily involved with the Boy Scouts of American, was a Master Mason, and member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was skilled at woodworking and will be fondly remembered for his love of tending and cultivating his garden.

Surviving are: his wife of fifty-seven years, Mrs. Dell Carson McCraw; two sons, Mike McCraw and his wife Rhonda of North Charleston and Bruce McCraw of Walterboro; a daughter, Joy McCraw VonKaenel of Walterboro; a sister, Frances McCraw Walker of New Bern, North Carolina; and a granddaughter, Joslyn McCraw VonKaenel who is presently attending Clemson University.

Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: Bethel Baptist Church, care of Mrs. Mary Jo Craven, 180 Ruth Lane, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
