Former Greenport resident Robert Halsey Dennis of Madison, Conn., died on Dec. 5, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Conn., after a brief illness. He was 85.

Born Jan. 14, 1920, to Alfred and Edna (Ging) Dennis, Mr. Dennis was raised in Greenport and attended local schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Dennis lived in Greenfield, Mass., from 1947 to 1964, where he worked as an industrial engineer with Greenfield Tap & Die. Later, he worked as manager of methods engineering for the geometric tool division of United Greenfield Corporation in New Haven, Conn.

According to a family statement, Mr. Dennis had a lifelong love of jazz and was an accomplished saxophonist.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth (née Boerum); his children, Sharon Elmore of Madison, Conn., and Robert, of Glastonbury, Conn; his brother Edmund, of Charlottesville, Va.; two sisters, Myrne, of White Plains, N.Y., and Jean, of Suffern, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Donald.

Services and burial will be private. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Guilford Funeral Home, Guilford, Conn.
