STATE NEWS.
The Clinton Democrat says Miss Bertha Matthews, a young lady of Goldsboro, has brought suit for $10,000 damages against Dr. J. D. Spicer of that town, charging him with malpractice. In her complaint Miss Matthews alleges that in performing a simple operation upon her eye two years ago, Dr. Spicer by mistake applied a poisonous lotion to the eye, thereby seriously impairing the sight.

OBITUARIES.

MATTHEWS---Miss Bertha Sloan Matthews, 88, well known retired school teacher, 701 Shepherd St., died at Watts Hospital Wednesday afternoon at 12:40 o'clock. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 o'clock at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Chapel. Interment Wiilow Dale Cemetery, Goldsboro. The body will rest at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home.

MISS BERTHA MATTHEWS.
Miss Bertha Sloan Matthews, 88, retired school teacher of 701 Shepherd St., died at Watts Hospital Wednesday at 12:40 p.m.
She was born in Duplin County, the daughter of Oliver M. Matthews and Elizabeth Caroline Wilson Matthews. She received her education in the Goldsboro city schools and graduated from the Greensboro Teachers College.
For a long number of years she has been a member of Temple Baptist Church, where she was affiliated with the Woman's Missionary Union.
Following her graduation she taught school in Alamance County, later moving to Durham. For more tha 50 years she taught in the Durham City schools, the greater part of which was at Morehead school, retiring a number of years ago.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. D. T. Sasser, Durham. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
The body has been removed to Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home where funeral services will be held Friday at Willow Dale Cemetery, Goldsboro.

CHURCH LEFT $500 IN MATTHEWS WILL.
Miss Bertha Matthews who died May 30 left the sum of $500 to Temple Baptist Church in a will filed for probate in Superior Court office.
Estate value was not listed in the will dated March 8, 1962.
An oil painting, a diamond ring and $800 is left to a niece, Vidia Burke Matthews. Another niece, Elizabeth M Shaban, is to recieve $250.
The sum of $531.46, including a "Debt," will go to a nephew, LeRoy P. Spoon, while another nephew, Lawrence Wilson, will recieve $350. A portrait and $400 is left to a third Nephew, John F. Matthews.
A sister, Mrs. D. R. Sasser, is to recieve $500, while a grandnephew, Tom Holder, is bequeathed a table.
The sum of $300 is left to a friend, James Hilary Coman, and $200 to another friend, Mrs. George Godley.
