William was the oldest child of Barthena (Scott) and William Seymour Campbell Jr. His exact birthdate is unknown. He had three brothers: Thomas Jefferson Campbell , Anderson T (no information), and David F (no information). William C. was a Civil War cavalryman and twice his horse was shot from beneath him. Once was in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the other time was in a battle just across the Tennessee line in Georgia near Chickamauga.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Webb in 1867 in Hamilton county, TN. They had two children:

(1) Frances Louise "Fanny" Campbell who married Rev. Richard Venible Thompson.
(2) William L. "Billy" Campbell who married Olevia Ann Henderson.

William C. most likely died at Howell county, Missouri in the spring or summer of 1870 from an acute attack of pneumonia.
