Lawrence Marion Craft, 78, of Wood River, a former Grand Island grocer died Sunday, Oct. 9.
Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. William Doran will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island Cem.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 3-9 p.m. at the Funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Wood River.
Mr. Craft was born Oct. 26, 1909, at Hastings, and in 1932 went to work in a creamery in Norfolk.
On May 4, 1932, he married Mollie Hofferber at Norfolk. They moved to Aurora where he worked for the Aurora Creamer until 1942, when he went to Bremerton, Wash., to work in the naval shipyard.
In 1944 they came to Grand Island where he purchased the McDowell Grocery on Fourth street and changed the store's name to Handy Grocery. He operated the store until 1973.
He was also a relief driver for City Motors and owned and raced Thoroughbred Horses across the state. Mrs. Craft died in March 1982, for the past four years he had lived at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Wood River.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Eagle Aerie No. 378.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Marian) Hensley of Wood River, two granddaughters, Mrs. Larry Ann Bentley of Miller, Ne, Mrs. David (Kay) Davis, Grand Island; and one grandson, Steve Hensley, Axtell; 3 great grandchildren, Molly and Mark Bentley of Miller and Christopher Davis, Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
