Australian news reader. James Dibble made history on November 25, 1956, when he presented the first television news bulletin of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. His then became one of the best known faces on Australian television, appearing on ABC TV News in Sydney for twenty-seven years, until he presented his last news bulletin on June 10, 1983. His first television news bulletin reported the Soviet intervention in the Hungarian Revolution, when the events in Hungary caused the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to move up the scheduled debut of their TV news service. Many Australians also learned about the assassination of John F. Kennedy from James Dibble, as well as many other historic events such as the Apollo 11 lunar landing and the Melbourne Olympic Games. Mr. Dibble was a member of the Order of the British Empire and a member of the Order of Australia, for community and media services. He was also honored by Better Hearing Australia because his diction meant the deaf were able to lip read his bulletins. James Dibble died of cancer December 13, 2010, at a retirement village at Narrabeen, on Sydney's northern beaches.
