US Congressman. Originally a farmer, he joined the Union Army at the outbreak of the Civil War and served in the 15th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he graduated from Illinois State Normal University, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1872. Settling in Hinsdale, Illinois, he opened a law practice, was a member of the village board of trustees, and served as president of the school board. In 1893, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third Congress, serving until 1895. Not a candidate for renomination, he resumed the practice of law in Chicago, Illinois, until his death.
