S. C. State Senator

Senator Frank H. McGill,Sr., 60, died Friday. Senator McGill was born in Williamsburg County, November 29,1927, a son of the late John Yancy McGill and Pauline Watson McGill.

He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Brevard College, and owner of Frank H. McGill Real Estate Co.

He was a member and former Decon of the Kingstree First Baptist Church where he was also a Youth Sunday School Teacher.

In 1961 he was elected to Kingstree Town Council, and in 1966 was elected Mayor of Kingstree. From 1971 to 1976 he served in the SC House of Representatives and in 1977 was elected to the South Carolina State Senate. In June he won the Democratic Primary for re-nomination to another term.

Senator McGill was named Kingstree "Man of the Year" in 1963. He was one of the first Directors of the County Manpower Center, now Williamsburg Tech and was a former member of the Williamsburg County Development Board.

He was active in Youth work, having coached football, baseball, ans boxing clubs. He was a member of the first Bi-racial Committee to promote community relations in Williamsburg County.

While in the Senate, Senator McGill served on the Finance, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Fish, Game and Forestry, Corrections and Penology and General Committees of the Senate.

Funeral Services were held Sunday in the First Baptist Church of Kingstree conducted by Dr. Ted Mears, Rev. George Meetze and the Rev. B.J.Gordon. Burial followed in the Cedar Swamp Methodist Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home.

Surviving are his wife: Mrs. Peggy Tomlinson McGill of Kingstree; Four sons: F. Hilton McGill, Jr. and John Yancy McGill of Kingstree, Dr. S. Ted McGill of Orangeburg and R. Tommy McGill of Columbia; Two daughters: Mrs. Melissa M. Rogan of Kingstree and Mrs. Mary Beth M. Carter of Fayetteville, NC; Three sisters. Mrs. Polly M. Connor, Mrs. Helen M. Adams and Miss Julia McGill, all of Kingstree, and 12 grandchildren.
