August 1952 Barney was drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean War; he served from 1952 – June 1954 doing communication & telephone installation. Lawrence retired from Western Electric after 30 years of service in 1981.
Over the years Barney's hobbies included photography, model airplanes, solar home energy and a variety of small electronics. Machining, milling and lath work began his lifelong passion for Model Live Steam Engines. He built 3 Live Steam Engines, one at 1" scale and three at 1 ½" scale, he also assisted with the building of several others.
Lawrence was well known in the "Live Steamers" as the most knowledgeable pump designer and builder in the Model Train Industry. Pumps by Barney have a reputation around the world as the most reliable steam pumps available.
October 30, 1965 Lawrence married Margaret A. Finch. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this year.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; brother, Carl (Donna) Barningham; four children from a prior marriage: Yvonne (Dennis) Ferbrache, Michael (Debbie) Barningham, Robert (Nola) Barningham and Janine (Doug) Tumey; 8 Grandchildren: Jamie, Cathleen, Nichole, Daniel, Nathan, Trenton, Moriah and Timothy; and 3 great grandchildren: Courtney, Isaiah, and Michael.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his father, two grandchildren, and most recently, 3 weeks ago, his 102 year old mother.
Barney cherished his very large extended family and many many close friends. He looked forward to every phone call and every visit. He was so gracious and thankful for the time each one of you gave to him.
