John Dewitt Allen was born June 18, 1837 in Good Hope, Fayette County, Ohio. He was the son of James (or John) Squire Allen and Hannah Jane (Dewitt) Allen. Notice John's middle name was his mother's maiden name. John Dewitt Allen married Mariah Louisa Smith on Aug 28, 1862 in Ohio. Sometime between the birth of their 3rd and 4th child (1867 and 1870) they moved to Missouri. They had five more children who were born in Missouri (see Mariah's page for names, dates and birthplaces). Both John and Mariah's mother's name's were Hannah: Hannah Jane (Dewitt) Allen and Hannah (Jones) Smith, so they named their oldest daughter Hannah. That explains why she went by "Jennie" or "Jane" on some of the census records.
