Son of Guy Albert Austin (1886-1964) and Minnie Louise (Dunham) Austin (1887-1977).

Union-News (Springfield, MA) - Thursday, September 10, 1992:

Louis M. Austin, 80, of 16 Main St., Montague City, died Tuesday at Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

He worked several years ago at the old First National Store and The Tannery in Winchester, N.H., and then for George W. Wilcox Inc.

He managed the tire-treading shop in Greenfield for 10 years, and in 1954 purchased the business and operated it as Austin's Tire Service for 10 years. He was an instructor for the National Tire Treading Association in Washington, D.C.

He was an assistant manager at the Greenfield Bowl-O-Mat 10-Pin Lanes for many years, and service manager at Don Lorenz Inc. in Greenfield.

He retired in 1981 as an automotive electronic technician at Cowan Auto Supply in Greenfield.

Born in Saxtons River, Vt., he attended schools there and Bellows Falls, Vt. He moved later to Winchester, N.H.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in the 3789th Quartermaster Truck Company.

He was commodore and secretary of the Franklin County Boat Club, and secretary of the Franklin County 10-Pin Men's League for many years. He belonged to the Greenfield Moose, and was a keen fisherman.

He leaves his wife, the former Ruth E. Milkey; two sons, Philip M. of Montague City and Leroy E. of Winchester, N.H.; a daughter, Lorraine M. Bellows of Langdon, N.H.; a sister, Alice Packard of Saxtons River; four brothers, Harley of Scotia, N.Y., Bernard of Brattleboro, Vt., Lawrence of Springfield, Vt., and Richard of Zephyrhills, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday afternoon at McCarthy Funeral Home of Turners Falls, with burial in Aaron Clark Cemetery. Calling hours are on Friday before the funeral.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church, L Street, Turners Falls, 01376, or any other charity.
