First Sergeant Howard D. Miller, United States Army [RET], joined his Lord in the Kingdom of Heaven, on the 17th of Dec, 2010. He passed peacefully at his home surrounded by is loving family and brother. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend to all he knew. He was born 23rd of September, 1934 and was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church of Macomb. He served his country for 20 years in the Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army. Serving in two major wars, Korea and Vietnam. He held several key leadership positions, from team/squad leader, Drill Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant to First Sergeant over his commendable and dedicated service. He was a Sergeant Major designee prior to his retirement. He earned several awards and decorations which include: Three Bronze Stars, Three Meritorious Service Medals, and Three Army Commendation Medals along with the coveted one star Combat Infantry Badge. He was preceded in death by his parents, W. Howard Miller, and Irene Miller, both of Macomb, one sister Bertha "Polly" Davis. Surviving are his brother James W. (Dolorus) Miller of Macomb, and sister Halcyon "Kaye" Spangler of Macomb, and brother-in-law Herb (Pat) Davis of DeValls Bluffs, AR. He his survived by his wife, Ann, one son Tom Miller, and 3 daughters, Rosi (Ronnie) Neil, Cindy Miller, and Karla Rice. His grandchildren include Rebecca (Ryan), Dustin, Tyler, Tom, and Chance. Great Grandchildren Jacob, Nicholas, Autumn, Cherokee, Seth, and Damien. Upon his retirement from the Army he returned to Macomb and Retired from Western Illinois University. "Luke" enjoyed a good coon hunt, having several high quality coon hounds, and fishing on the Mississippi River with his family and friends. Funeral services will be at 10 AM Wednesday December 22, 2010 at St. Paul's Church. Monsignor Richard Pricco will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 PM at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home. A Catholic wake service will be held at 8 PM. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery with Military rites.
