John Herschell came to America in 1869. He married his sweetheart, Martha Leitch (who was also from Scotland) on July 10, 1871 in the East Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, New York and settled in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana. He got a job with the railroad, which took him and his family to several places in Southern Indiana until he finally settled in Princeton. Together he and Martha had 5 children.
In 1882, Martha passed away. A year later, on November 22, 1883, John married Nellie Peak. They had 2 daughters, Fannie and Jessie.
