George Henry Helwig was born on December 5, 1902 in Silver Run, Maryland. He was the 3rd child of seven born to Martin Luther Helwig and Etta A Hymiller Helwig. On February 20, 1926 he married Vesta Pauline Strevig. Within the next 18 years, they had 3 children, Dean Strevig Helwig, Wayne Edward Helwig and Darlene Alice Helwig. He died on July 2, 1984 at Hanover General Hospital from a rare form of leukemia.

He was a delivery man for Conewago Dairy in Hanover, PA. He was a very kind and gentle man who loved spending time with his family. He also loved to build bird houses. He was a Sunday school teacher at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church on York Street in Hanover, PA.

He is survived by is wife, 3 children and 8 grand-children. He is also survived by 3 brothers and 1 sister, Ralph Birnie Helwig Sr., Martin B Helwig, Catherine E Helwig Jones and Gerald Walter "Hap" Helwig. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John L Helwig and one sister, M Pauline Helwig Myers.

He is buried at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover, Pennylvania.
