Robert was one of nine children and a farmer in Webster Township. He came to America with his parents about 1834. Married on 1 April 1842, he and his first wife, Fanny Muir, had no children. His second marriage was to Hannah Jane Wilson Muir on 24 March 1874 in Wood County and they had one daughter, Anna.
